Bugonia Review: Yorgo Lanthimos New Movie is Wild

Bugonia Review: Yorgos Lanthimos Goes Wild in His Most Absurd Film Yet.

In this article, we’re talking about the film Bugonia. Directed by Greek film director Yorgos Lanthimos, the film stars Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, and Aidan Delbis.

This film is based on the Korean film “Save the Green Planet“, which is absolutely one you should check out. And it really sets itself apart from that film and I think both films are very good in their own ways, and it definitely doesn’t feel like you’re supplementing watching that film.

Kidnapping, Comedy, and Conspiracy: Is Bugonia Yorgos Lanthimos' Best Film?

Emma Stone bald in a Yorgos Lanthimos film? This sounds gloriously weird. This movie really surprised me with the direction that it takes. It’s much more of a horror movie than I expected it to be. Definitely a sci-fi element to it. The basic premise of it is that Jesse Plemons’s character (Teddy) believes that there are aliens in our society that are running things under or like in charge of all the different things, and they’re destroying the planet or whatever, manipulating the planet at the very least, and that they’re responsible for his mother’s death.

You Have to See Bugonia: It's Yorgos Lanthimos at His Weirdest

And especially Emma Stone’s character (Michelle Fuller). Teddy believes that she is an alien, and she runs this company that is like a pharmaceutical company. Teddy also believes that she’s the reason his mother died or is sick or something along those lines.

Bugonia Review: Yorgos Lanthimos’ New Movie is Wild

Bugonia is a movie where you’re following this character who is just dealing with some mental issues. And it’s pretty dark and messed up in a way because of, you know, it’s pretty clear that this guy has got a warped sense of reality and things like that.

But there’s also a hilarious thread throughout this entire movie. You’ll laugh numerous times because sometimes it’ll be an actual joke. Then, a lot of times, it’s just straight up, like situational humor where things are just odd in a humorous way or things happen in a quirky, unique way. But it’s just an entertaining movie. For the most part, it’s just a very funny, fun, exciting sci-fi, horror, psychological thriller. Like, it’s got a lot of genres kind of blended together. It’s one that I think most people are just going to be entertained by.

Emma Stone & Jesse Plemons Go Bonkers in the New Lanthimos Film, Bugonia

Jesse Plemons is amazing. Like, everybody involved with making this did a great job. It was one of the more fun movies that I saw this year at Fantastic Fest. If you see Bugonia, you should absolutely see “Save the Green Planet”. Yorgos Lanthimos gives us young Greek artists hope. I am so proud of him and I hope he continues to create such inspiring, wacky worlds through his films.

If anyone hasn’t Dogtooth and the Alps, especially, all of Lanthimos’ Greek-language films are a must-watch. I discovered him with Dogtooth all those years ago and his career has been kind of mind-blowing. Seems to never misstep and ensures all his films have that unique ‘clinical’ tone.
